Bogota is the fourth biggest city in South America and an important university city. This bustling metropolis impresses its visitors by interesting contrasts. Colourful buildings from the colonial style in the historic Old Town stand next to modern and glittering skyscrapers in the business district. In various cafes in the Old Town, La Candelaria, you can have a traditional ‘santafereño’ for breakfast – a cup of hot chocolate and some bread and cheese to dip into it. This might sound slightly unconventional as a food combination but the locals love it. This local speciality even takes its name from the city itself, which was called Santafé de Bogota until the year 2000. The main city square, Plaza de Bolivar, is encircled by government buildings and the majestic cathedral, ‘Catedral Primada de Colombia. In the city centre there are well-known museums about the history, art and culture of South America as well as many galleries and theatres. On Sunday you should definitely visit the typical Colombian flea market in the neighbourhood of Usaquen. You can buy colourful souvenirs and buy delicious meals. In Zona Rosa, Parque 93 and Chapinero, in the centre of Bogotan nightlife, young people meet in the late hours and dance the night away in exciting salsa rhythms.
