Lyon is characterised by narrow and intricate streets with plenty of bistros, bars and excellent restaurants. The capital city of the Rhône-Alpes region has a unique varied cultural scene. Here you will find many museums, theatres, the magnificent Opera hall and large green parks. Many ancient religious buildings, an antique Roman amphitheatre and narrow streets called “Traboules” create the image of the city. They are actually intricate passages connecting one courtyard to another. This maze of alleyways is still popular among visitors who walk across inner courtyards. Getting lost in this romantic labyrinth is a good way to discover the hidden charming corners and sites of the city such as the old puppet theatre. The nightlife in Lyon is also worth experiencing. Vieux Lyon, the historic city centre lying on the left bank of the river Saône, has been declared UNESCO World Heritage. On the top of the Fourvière hill the awe-inspiring Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière dominates the city since 1872. The church can be reached by cable car.
