Los Angeles

“City of Angels” – this is what the people of this famous Californian city call their home town. The city offers miles and miles of dreamlike beaches, such as Malibu Beach, Venice Beach or Redondo Beach. Los Angeles is the second largest city in the US, right behind New York City. The glamour that is connected with Los Angeles enchants people from all over the world, because this is the city where American film history is made. “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, “Melrose Place” or “Beverly Hills 90210” were some of the most famous television programmes of the 90s. Every year the most desired awards, the famous Academy Awards, are hosted in Los Angeles. The “Walk of Fame” on “Sunset Boulevard” right next to the gigantic “Grauman’s Chinese Theatre” honours the crème de la crème of the music and film industry with a star on the sidewalk. The most famous districts next to Hollywood with its gigantic film industry are Beverly Hills and Bel Air, where stars and starlets have their homes, as well as Torrance, which is very popular among wealthy families, as it is a safe area to live in. “Rodeo Drive” is home to the first-class boutiques and international designer labels Julia Roberts shopped in for the film “Pretty Woman”. On “Melrose Avenue” in West Hollywood you will always find the latest and most unusual fashion. The “Sunset Strip”, a part of the “Sunset Boulevard”, is located between Beverly Hills and Hollywood and is one of the most famous streets in Los Angeles. Strolling along during the day you will find unique opportunities to go shopping and some excellent restaurants. At night some of the best restaurants and clubs in the USA open their doors for those who don’t want to spend the night sleeping. Famous nightclubs include the legendary black-painted “Viper Room”, which has hosted the bands Oasis and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and the bright red rock club “Whisky A Go-Go”, where The Doors started their career.
During the day you can enjoy the sun and the roaring sea at “Surfrider Beach”, go inline skating and skateboarding amongst the beautiful people of “Venice Beach”, watch bodybuilders working out at “Muscle Beach” or just relax in Santa Monica or at “Redondo Beach” in Torrance.

Sightseeing in Los Angeles

You can get a first impression of Los Angeles from the observatory at “Griffith Park”, which is located very close to the famous 9 “Hollywood”-letters. The panorama from this point is unique.
Driving along the “Pacific Coast Highway No. 1” from North to South is another experience you shouldn’t miss. When you start in “Malibu Beach”, pass Santa Monica and then drive to “Redondo Beach” in Torrance, where you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Ocean in the West of the City of Angels. Incidentally, this stretch of coast used to be the location for the TV programme “Baywatch”.

The roots of Los Angeles are located around “Olvera Street” in the centre: there are still some of the original houses left in downtown L.A., which were built when Los Angeles was only a small village.
Besides the big film studios, such as Warner Brothers, L.A. offers another treasure: in the “Museum of Contemporary Art” you can admire the works of Rothko or Mondrian. The famous 9 letters of Hollywood were put up in the hills in 1923. In front of the “Grauman’s Chinese Theatre” on the “Walk of Fame” you should take photos of hand- and footprints of film stars like Clark Gable and Sylvester Stallone. The “Walk of Fame” became famous due to the stars embedded on the sidewalk that show the names of international actors and musicians. The “Universal Studios” in Hollywood are also very popular in Los Angeles. They offer an insight into film productions and at the same time are a huge amusement park. L.A. is also known for the numerous agents who walk around the city looking for extras for series such as the “Jerry Springer Show”. Tickets are free and with a bit of luck you could be one of the people sitting in the audience of a TV programme.
