Testing your entry level
The course at your chosen language school will commence with a test to assess your current language aptitude. This will help us choose the most relevant course for you.
Levels
An exact assessment of your level of language takes place at the school. The level you describe when booking your course is only necessary to give the school a general idea of your knowledge of the language. Levels usually converge into each other. Course participants with an elementary knowledge of the language may in some cases reach a more advanced level after one week’s course.
Most of our schools use the European Language Certificate (TELC)
system which is a framework described by the European Council (1991). This enables us to compare levels of language, even in different languages. Each level describes its achievements as well as its aims. With this framework, the European Council created guidelines to help learners categorize their knowledge and measure
their success.
A0 – Beginner Level
You have no knowledge of the language whatsoever.
A1 – Elementary Level
You know a few words of the language, you may be able to
understand a few phrases and only say a few words. You have no or hardly any knowledge of the grammar of the language you are learning.
A2 – Lower Intermediate Level
You know a few words and phrases for everyday purposes, but
you cannot speak fluently. You have a rudimentary knowledge of the grammar of the language you are learning.
B1 Intermediate Level
You can communicate well in familiar matters. You have a
good level of listening and reading comprehension. You may still have difficulties with pronunciation and technical terms.
B2 – Upper Intermediate Level
You communicate well and you can understand abstract and
new topics. You have a good knowledge of technical terms and you are able to have a conversation with native speakers.
C1 – Advanced Level
You communicate very well, albeit with minor mistakes. You can communicate
fluently, spontaneously and
in any situation. You can understand technical texts. You would categorize
yourself as advanced and you would like to improve your knowledge of technical terms or improve
your knowledge of the language to a perfect level.
C2 – Upper Advanced Level
You have a very rich vocabulary, you use grammar correctly without having
to think about it and speak fluently.
You understand anything you may read or hear, and you can summarise information
without difficulties. Your aim is to speak the language like a native speaker
or to improve your knowledge of the language as a linguist / translator to a degree of perfection.
