Ushuaia

Ushuaia is the capital of the province Tierra del Fuego in Argentina and the most southern city of the country. It is located at the Beagle Channel, at the same time, Ushuaia is also the most southern city of the world. The city has approximately 65.000 inhabitants.
Ushuaia unites the mountains and forests of Tierra del Fuego with the ocean. With its untouched nature, the city is known to be the beginning or the end of the world, depending on perspective. The discovery of the islands by Ferdinand Magellan, at the beginning of the 16th century, the Spanish colonisation and the gold rush, during the 19th and 20th century, led to a population mixture of indigenous people and European settlers. Today only a small number of indigenous people are still living on the islands.

Excursions and expeditions to Antarctica start from here. Ushuaia is located at the bottom of the glacier Martial that offers the best view over the city, its beautiful surrounding area, the wide coniferous forests, with cypresses, spruces and cedars, and the Mountains of Chile. Different types of seals and Magellanic Penguins, named after the famous Portuguese explorer, can be seen while canoeing along the coastline. While hiking in the highlands, you can see Guanacos, a type of lama, and sometimes even pumas. Especially, the close national park ’Tierra del Fuego’ offers a fantastic insight into the flora and fauna of the islands.
You can also find the ’Carcel del Fín del Mundo’, the prison of the end of the world in Ushuaia, where criminals and felons were kept during the last century. Today the prison is a museum, where famous inmates are presented as wax figures. A further attraction of Tierra del Fuego is ’El Tren del Fín del Mundo’, the train of the end of the world. The train ride leads through many kilometres of the beautiful scenery of Tierra del Fuego.
