Santiago de Chile

Santiago de Chile, along with some of its neighbouring communes, represents the cultural and political centre of Chile. This fascinating trading metropolis houses almost 5 million inhabitants and is embedded in the valley of the neighbouring Andes. The city itself could just as well be in Europe, as the inhabitants and their way of life is much more similar to those of Berliners, Londoners or the residents of Madrid than the typical fiery South American temperament. The discreet deservedness, hospitality and openness to other cultures of the Chilean locals will definitely find a place in your heart.

Numerous tranquil parks with cycle paths and open air stages, theatres, opera houses, museums and other grand buildings adorn Santiago’s cityscape. The city also organises a number of artistic and musical events for the city’s residents, who celebrate e.g. the yearly ‘Festival Internacional de Teatro Santiago a Mil’, one of Chile’s most important theatre festivals. Also, Santiago is well known for the breathtaking view of the snow-topped Andean peaks that surround the city, its wide river called the ‘Río Mapocho’, its numerous clubs, its electro music scene and fresh and modern appearance. Here, the sounds of pop and rock are fused with traditional Salsa and Meringue rhythms, while young and old alike play chess in the shade, have picnics in the park or sit comfortably in restaurants, which serve Chilean specialities such as ‘Empanadas’, delicious balls of pastry filled with egg and mincemeat, and grilled beef filets.

Santiago de Chile is just as far from the sea as the numerous ski resorts with ever-snowy pistes against the backdrop of the snow-topped Andean peaks; all within an hour and a half’s drive. If you go up the ‘Cerro San Christobal’ hill, on foot or on cable car, in the artist’s and worker’s district of ‘Bellavista’, you can get a great panoramic view over the city.

Sightseeing in Santiago de Chile
In Santiago de Chile, there are numerous sights worth seeing such as the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Fine Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art. The heart of the city has an imposing cathedral and a house in memory of Salvador Allende.

The school team organises excursions every week, e.g. to the museum of Pablo Neruda in the Bellavista district. Pablo Neruda was one of Chile’s most loved sons and won the Nobel Prize for Literature. There are also tours to places such as ‘Palacio Cousiño’, the statehouse of the powerful Cousiño family, and to NGO CODEFF, which is Chile’s oldest environmental organisation. The weekends create ample opportunities for trips to the Andes, to nearby national parks and the hot springs of the ‘Cerro Santa Lucia’ park. Other extra-curricular activities e.g. rafting, rock climbing and trekking tours through the Andes can be organised too. All year round, there are cultural and music events and festivals, for example the ‘Festival Internacional de Teatro Santiago a Mil’, a significant theatre festival which attracts thespians and music lovers from all around Chile.
