Mendoza

Mendoza, in the Western part of Argentina, is known to many as the last stop-off point before embarking on the journey to the summit of South America’s highest mountain, the ‘Aconcagua’ which reaches the dizzying height of 6962 metres. Because it is so near to the Andes, Mendoza attracts many extreme sports enthusiasts. You can get a great view over this metropolis of 1.3 million inhabitants from the hill ‘Cerro de la Gloria’. It is mainly hikers, mountain climbers and mountain bikers who come here in summer and skiers and snowboarders during the winter months. Mendoza is a very green city and is in full bloom from spring to late summer; its thousands of plants and trees, which offer a haven of shade in the warmer months, are irrigated by small waterways in the streets all around the city.

The city’s parks are used by locals and tourists alike as an oasis or for sport, whereas it also has numerous museums, cinemas, attractive shopping malls, countless markets, opera houses and theatres. Mendoza’s most important square is ‘Plaza Independencia’, around which the central districts and streets are built, for example the large pedestrianised zone, also known as ‘Sarmiento’. In the west of the city, lies the ‘Parque San Martín’, which is the largest park of this multicultural city, from which the zoo is only a short walk away, as well as the university, the local stadium and a monument in memory of the revolutionary ‘San Martín’. The natural historic museum ‘Museo Cornelio Moyano’ and the wine museum ‘Museo Nacional de Vino’ are definitely worth visiting.
You can go on great excursions from Mendoza to the nearby Andes up the ‘Aconcagua’ or even to Chile.

Sightseeing in Mendoza

The school can organise certain extra-curricular activities for students such as trips to ‘Plaza de Armas’, museums or wine cellars. They can also organise days out to the huge ‘San Martín’ park, which lies at the foot of the Andes and is known for its biodiversity. You can take up many different types of sport here such as paragliding, jogging, football in the stadium or just walking by the marina or the lake. Within these lush grounds, there is the city’s zoo as well as the National Science Museum. There is also a large aquarium in Mendoza, which boasts a multitude of amphibians, fish and reptiles. The weekends are an ideal time to discover the Andes and go on the ‘Puente del Inca’ trail, where you can cross an ancient Inca bridge and go along a path that winds through the mountains. The Inca Bridge is one of the Mendoza region’s most well-known sights and is not too far from the ancient hot springs, where you can go bathing. With a glass of Argentine ‘Malbec’, you can wind down in the evening at a typically Argentine restaurant. Mendoza also hosts a great wine festival from summer till early autumn, which is definitely worth visiting, and ends with a bang in March with a huge celebration for the nomination of the ‘Wine Queen’ with lots of music of dancing.

As the Andes are only an hour away in the car, you can go skiing and snowboarding on wide snowy pistes in Mendoza’s winter months.
