Population aid project
Our school in La Antigua supports a humanitarian aid programme to build libraries in the rural parts of Guatemala. 25% of your course fees will automatically go towards this project, so by taking a language course in La Antigua you will automatically support these charitable causes.
46% of the rural population (many of them children) in Guatemala are
illiterate. It is the aim of the project to supply textbooks to all schools
in Guatemala to help people learn to read and write.
Our students are warmly invited to visit the libraries and the schools
in order to take a look at the project and meet some of the children
the project is aimed at. The children love meeting our students and take
great pleasure in picking up a few English words.
Guatemala
The population of Guatemala is originally Indian and has its roots in a rich Mayan and Indian culture. The people are extremely hospitable and extend a warm welcome to all visitors.
La Antigua
La Antigua, the former capital of Guatemala, has been designated as
a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the main attractions of
the country.
La Antigua is rich in architectural jewels of the Renaissance and the Spanish
Baroque styles. The city is situated in a superb landscape with impressive
volcanoes.
The school
Our school offers a comfortable and very welcoming atmosphere for students
from around the world. Lessons are on a one to one basis which is ideal
for students who want to learn Spanish quickly and effectively. Additionally,
students learn a great deal about the Guatemalan lifestyle and culture.
The school offers many excursions, for example a visit to the colourful
Indian market in Chichicastenango, as well as Salsa and cookery courses
.
Most students' favourite excursion is a trip to Lake Atitlan, which is
situated in the most beautiful nature resort in the country. You can
visit the Indian villages by the side of the lake or climb the surrounding
volcanoes. The school also organises trips to excavation sites, to the
ruins of the Mayan culture and the colonial era, as well as visits to
museums and folk festivals.

Sightseeing in La Antigua
Antigua Guatemala, formerly Santiago de los Caballeros, is situated
on the Agua Volcano. The town has ca. 30 thousand inhabitants and is
a cultural stronghold with its many churches and ruins.
The town was built in Spanish colonial style which can still be seen
in parks, churches and other buildings, and it has a rich tradition in
folk songs.
Until 1773, when it was destroyed by an earthquake, Antigua was said
to be the most beautiful town in Guatemala. In 1979, the town was given
the status of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
You can see many of the buildings that have been rebuilt and renovated
around the Plaza de Armas, e.g. the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales
as well as the Museo de Santiago and the Museo del Libro Antiguo. We
also recommend a visit to the cloister las Capuchinas.
