Flores

The small peninsula Flores is located in the north of Guatemala. The island, which is surrounded by the lake Petén Itzá, is home to 20.000 inhabitants. A causeway connects the island with the mainland. Guests are given a hearty welcome. The townscape is adorned by colourful houses from colonial times, small shops and cafés. The rainforest, nearby, is home to numerous exotic creatures. The indigenous city San Cristobal is only a few kilometres away. Visitors, who come to this area, will see indigenous people, who have followed their traditions for hundreds of years. At the market, mostly indigenous women sell hand-carved articles, pottery, fruits and vegetables. The giant ancient Mayan city Tikal is only 70 kilometres away from Flores. From here you will have a magnificent view of the green rainforest and the excavated temples and pyramids of the ancient Mayan culture. A lot of historical sites are still waiting to be found and excavated. This is also one of the reasons, why the director of our language school, a passionate archaeologist, has chosen this location to establish a language school together with us.

The school

Our language school is located in the city centre of Flores. The lake is only a few walking minutes away. The school, a two-storied building of colonial times, has two large, friendly and colourful classrooms. Due to its central location, course participants will be 'in the thick of it' and will be able to enjoy the Central American way of life right after their language lessons. All of our language tutors are qualified, native speakers, who have several years of experience in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

Sightseeing in Flores

A lot of things can be explored in Flores. The town offers numerous small cafés, restaurants, bars and shops. The Tikal National Park, situated approximately 60 kilometres north of Flores, is an absolute highlight in the surroundings of Flores and has been classified as a World Heritage Site. In the middle of a protected area that measures 50.000 hectares, you will find a ruined city from the Mayan times. Magnificent temples, adorned palaces and giant pyramids, whose tops rise majestically from the crowns of the jungle trees, make this place to be an unforgettable experience. The manifold flora and fauna of this area are also remarkable. The pyramid “El Tigre”, whose base alone is as large as three football fields, is the biggest Mayan building in the world.


Flores is a perfect place for Mayan and nature lovers. A rainforest walking tour or a trip to the lake Petén Itzá are other great excursion destinations.
