Córdoba

Córdoba lies centrally in Argentina and is the second largest city in the country, with a population of 1.3 million, after Buenos Aires. The flourishing metropolis was established by Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera in the late 16th century and has housed many educational institutions along the years, which has earned the city the nickname of ‘la docta’, the academic. In Córdoba’s centre, you will find historical and profane buildings and monuments, some Baroque and others in Spanish colonial style, as well as a host of grand religious buildings too. When walking around the city centre, you will soon hear the chiming of bells from churches all around the city. One of Córdoba’s most significant cathedrals lies right at the heart of Córdoba on ‘Plaza San Martin’. The cathedral was built in 1782 and in 1914, its nave was renovated by the famous Emilio Caraffa; one of Córdoba’s most important museums, ‘Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Emilio. E. Caraffa’, was opened in his honour. This museum is home to a great collection of art and also has many rotating exhibitions.

It can be found in ‘Nueva Córdoba’, which is an area very popular amongst students and offers a great range of events for day and night due to a diverse and formidable cultural programme. The city’s fusion of modernity and tradition made this metropolis the American Capital of Culture of 2006 and consequently became ever more popular amongst tourists and new settlers too. Córdoba is a place of famous theatres, some of the world’s best orchestras, a huge range of museums and large green spaces, such as ‘Parque Sarmiento’. The city provides many sporting opportunities, especially for basketball and football. There is also a large selection of tempting shopping precincts and boutiques in Córdoba, as well as art galleries, bars, pubs, restaurants and clubs in the artistic district ‘Alta Córdoba’ and trendy district of ‘Parque San Martín’ in the ‘Zona Chateau Carreras’. When in Córdoba, you can always hear people dancing to particular music in the evening, as central Argentina was where the fascinating musical style of ‘Cuarteto’ began to find popularity over 60 years ago. These types of music, typically Córdoban, and the dance to go with it are an integral part of the local culture and their identity. Something also typical to Córdoba is a big evening dinner at a ‘parilla’, which is a traditional grill bar, after which you can finish the evening on the dance floor at a ‘Bailes’, a sort of dancing evening, to the tune of South American melodies along with other keen dancers.

Sightseeing in Córdoba

Córdoba is one of Argentina’s cultural centres and offers a great range of museums, theatres, opera houses, cinemas, bars and clubs for a great time here, day and night. At the heart of the city centre, there is the ‘Plaza San Martín’; Córdoba’s main meeting point. The large square is surrounded by numerous streets, shopping areas and pedestrianised areas with wonderful little boutiques, fashion stores, bars and restaurants. The imposing buildings from the colonial area make for a great stroll around the city, which may be interrupted on several occasions by locals wanting to chat with visitors; a classic example of the inviting and welcoming manner of Argentineans. Córdoba offers a lot to discover such as the historic ‘Manzana de los Jesuitas’, which was built in the 17th century by the Jesuits. This large block of houses was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in the year 2000. Only a few minutes walk away, you can find the imposing cathedral, known as ‘Iglesia Catedral’, which has immaculate carvings inside. Another must-see is the ‘Santa Teresa’; an 18th century monastery painted in pink. The colourful monastery now houses the ‘Juan de Tejeda’ museum, which exhibits a large array religious artwork.

The city, which was the American Capital City of Culture in 2006, boasts a huge park with beautiful grounds called the ‘Parque Sarmiento’, which accommodates a zoo, an amusement park and a lake. This green space is popular amongst locals and tourists alike as it has lots of room to go jogging, cycling and play football, for example. Other sights to see are the law courts in the government district, the impressive ‘Paseo Sobremonte’ square with its fountain, the ‘Santa Domingo’ basilica, the historic ‘Cabildo’ administrative building, the observatory and the yearly carnival.
In the evenings, people meet in the ‘Nueva Córdoba’ district, a student area with many bars and clubs, the particularly noble area of ‘Cerro de las Rosas’ or on the bank of the ‘Rio Suquía’.
