Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and the gateway to South America. Due to its large population of 12.5 Million inhabitants, Buenos Aires is also the biggest city of the country and the economical, political and cultural centre of Argentina.
With its green parks, gigantic avenues, many churches and cheerful facades, Buenos Aires is also the most elegant and the most colourful city of South America. The numerous quarters reflect the international background of the so-called “Porteños”, the inhabitants of this port city, which has always been an important hub. The southern part of the city, called “La Boca”, the artists’ quarter, reminds us with its colourful facades of the friendly immigrants who once left their home country Italy to find their luck in the street “Calle Caminito”. Due to the temperamental joviality and the cheerful mentailty of the “Porteños”, it is no surprise that even the seat of the government, the “Casa Rosada”, located at the palm-lined “Plaza de Mayo”, is coloured in pink. Buenos Aires is home to one of the world’s most famous theatres and opera houses: the “Teatro Colón”. Even Pavarotti and Carreras have appeared on stage here. Buenos Aires is also a university city and an educational centre. Numerous museums show many exhibitions that offer a broad knowledge of South American history, culture and art.

Insiders’ tip: On Sunday morning, a brilliant antiques market takes place in the quarter “San Telmo”, where even tango dancers demonstrate their skills and prove once more that Buenos Aires is the birthplace of the tango. Each year on 11th December, the city celebrates the “Tango Day”. During the whole year, dance shows in the streets of “San Telmo” show that world class tango will be demonstrated to visitors on the Tango Day. After a small refreshment of a typical stuffed pastry, the so-called “Empanada”, Argentineans either meet to watch the football team “Boca Juniors” or dance to Latin beats in the café “Guantanamera“, in Puerto Madero.

Sightseeing in Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is a city which you don’t visit but explore. There are a lot of places which are extraordinary at a second glance, as for example "Plaza Dorrego" in the quarter "San Telmo". Originally, the upper class preferred to live here. Today this part of the city is mostly known for the tango. Each Sunday night, tango performances take place at this square. Music lovers enjoy a visit to the "Museo del Tango" or to the "Museo de Instrumentos".
"Plaza del Mayo" is a sight, which has its place in history, where the "Casa Rosada", the seat of the government, is located here. This colonial building used to be a fortress to protect the city from invasions from the river "Rio de la Plata". Later, Eva and Juan Domingo Peron spoke to the Argentinean people from the building’s balcony. The tomb of the general José de San Martin, who led Argentina to independence, together with Simón Bolivar, during the 19th century, is also at this square. The architecture of Buenos Aires comprises numerous styles, which reminds visitors once again of the immigrant nature of this city.

The cemetery of "Recoleta" is not just any old cemetery, Eva Peron and other historic statesmen are buried here. But it is not only the tombs of the rich and the famous that can be seen here. The cemetery itself is worth a visit. Across from the cemetery you can discover the exciting bars, restaurants and clubs. This is a 'must' at night.
