Costa Rica, San José

Costa Rica’s unique landscape, friendly inhabitants and wealth of traditional culture make it an amazing place! This tropical country has active and dormant volcanoes, tropical rainforests and mangrove swamps, as well as long, deserted paradise beaches along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines. Almost 30 % of Costa Rica is a conservation area. The Costa Rican state is like a bridge linking the two continents of North and South America. With only 3.7 million inhabitants, Costa Rica is one of the continent's smallest countries. It is also South America’s oldest democracy, free from military rule, and therefore safe for travellers.

All roads lead to the country’s capital, San José. The city lies on the Meseta Central, which is the country’s cultural and commercial centre. You can visit some of Costa Rica's finest monuments and museums here.

The school

Our language school is in Santo Domingo de Heredia, a 10 minute journey from the capital, San José. This small town offers bars, restaurants, parks, internet cafés and cinemas all within easy reach. The bus service to San José and Heredia starts just a couple of minutes away from the school.

The language school (under German management) has breathtaking views of the Meseta Central and its cliffs. The modern school building is on three floors and is set within a wonderful garden. The language school has 15 bright classrooms, equipped with TV, DVD, radio and CD-player. The school also boasts a terrace which is ideal for relaxing and studying.
The language school offers numerous group leisure activities, including lectures on a range of themes, dancing lessons, cookery classes for preparing traditional dishes, parties, acting sessions, group discussions and a guided tour of the city.

Sightseeing in Costa Rica

The best place to start a tour of San José is at the Museo Nacional in the Plaza de la Democracia. From there, proceed northwards past the Parque Nacional to the Castillo Azul, where Congress convenes. Other sights include the Biblioteca Nacional, with its unusual design, and the Centro Nacional Cultural, a former distillery. The city’s parks are called Parque Morazan, Parque Sabana and Parque Espana. To the west of Parque Espana lies the Edificio Metalico, which is well worth a visit. Definitely not to be missed are the town's historic quarters, Barrio Otoya and Barrio Amon. The famous Teatro Nacional is another must-see! It can be found in the Plaza de la Cultura. Nightlife in San José is located in the Centro Comercial El Pueblo, which is full of discos, shops and restaurants. Other places to visit include the Parque Nacional de Diversiones, a modern amusement park with a lake, the "Pueblo Antiguo“, which features a recreation of "old" Costa Rica, and the Parque Zoologico Simon Bolivar.
In San José, you can go on day trips to various places, such as the fascinating Meseta Central region, the coasts, or into the mountains. Other interesting places to visit include Cartago, Puerto Limón on the Caribbean coast, Puntarenas, Puerto Caldera, Liberia and Sámara on the Pacific coast.
