Chambéry lies in the French Alps, not far from the Italian and Swiss borders. In this small university town, a large number of the 55,000 inhabitants study at the local university. Chambéry is today a town in the region of the Rhône-Alpes department and was once the capital of the powerful House of Savoy.
Still today, the city bears the signs of its dignified history. The grand château is best reached by the 'Rue Basse-du-Château', whose passageways, round arches, small shops and display windows make it one of the most popular shopping streets in the town.
In the cobbled streets of Chambéry’s old town you will find beautiful aristocratic houses as well as a small weekly market at 'Place Sainte-Léger', which sells wonderful cured Alpine hams and a delicious array of regional cheeses. Just next to the château is the grand 'Sainte-Chapelle' cathedral. Inside you will find detailed paintings decorating the arched rooves. The town also houses the former dwelling of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, one of the pioneers of the 1789 French Revolution.
The 'Rue de Boigne' leads directly to Chambéry’s landmark: the Elephants Fountain, which, since the 1900s, has been a reminder of the Count Benoit de Boîgne’s adventures in India.
During the evenings, food lovers head to Jean-Michel Bouvier’s restaurant, the Michelin-starred 'L'essentiel' at 'Place de la Gare'. We highly recommend polenta strips with juniper, or the steak with a wine sauce. You should also try one of the wines from the Savoy region, such as those from 'Château Chalon'.
Nestled in the green forests, the vineyards and mountain lakes around Chambéry offer wonderful opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and climbing. Skiiers and snowboarders will find brilliant pistes in the mountains.

One of the most popular destinations is the unique 'Lac du Bourget', which is around 20km long and surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the mountains. Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the lakeside path, visit the aquarium or relax on the beaches.
Our language school is located inside of an elite school, which gives our students the opportunity to quickly get to know French students. Our school is approximately 10 minutes away from the city centre and can be reached easily with public transport. It is a very modern language school with 16 spacious, bright class rooms. Our school is well suited to beginners, who intend to learn French in a very short time. We also recommend this location for long-term students (courses for 8 weeks or longer).
Our friendly school team will organise film nights or walking tours through the historic part of Chambery. Course participants will learn a lot about the dignified House of Savoy. Further we will organise trips to castles of the region, wineries or to the big lake 'Lac du Bourget'. It is also possible to visit Cannes, Grenoble, Lausanne or to Geneva in Switzerland.
At our language school in Chambéry we offer the opportunity to combine the language course with fantastic winter sport options. After your language course in the French Alps you can go skiing. The ski trips take place on weekends and therefore can be combined with all French courses. The transfer to the ski area and the ski ticket are already included in the price. Ski equipment can be borrowed for an additional charge. The minimum stay is two weeks. At least two trips have to be booked.

This small university town is situated in the French Alps. During the
winter months, take advantage of the snow and ski on the slopes, and in the summer, the mountains
are ideal for hiking – enjoy the view from the Croix du Nivolet.
The lakes in the surrounding area are ideal for swimming, sunbathing
and relaxing. They can be reached by car or by bike. Wild water rafting
and paragliding is also possible. We recommend a visit to Jean-Jacque Rousseau’s house in Chambéry,
which can be visited every day except for bank holidays.
We also recommend a visit to the Château des Ducs de Savoie, Château Caramagne, Château de Buisson-Rond, Cathedrale Saint-François-de-Sales and the church Saint-Pierre de Lemenc. In June, Chambéry organises an annual music festival, la Fête de la Musique. You will find musicians, dancers and singers all over the town – a must for music lovers and musicians. Lyon and Annecy, which are only an hour’s train ride away, are also well worth a visit. Our school organises excursions and singing, drama and band workshops. These are especially suitable for long-term students.
