At the foot of one of the most active volcanoes in Europe lies peaceful Catania, which fell to ruins after a devastating eruption of the fire-spewing Mount Etna and a tremendous earthquake in the 17th century. Today the city, situated to the east of Sicily, possesses one of the most breathtaking city centres in Italy. Magnificent baroque buildings adorn the wide streets; the weathered facades, which are sprayed with fine showers of ashes time and again, have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Catania is also the home of the famous classical composer Vincenzo Bellini. His birthplace at the "Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi" and the theatre "Teatro Massimo Bellini" at "Via Guiseppe Perrotta" are well worth visiting. Just a few steps further and you will find the impressing cathedral "Sant’ Agata", which was built for the patron saint of the city. In the middle of the square in front of the cathedral you will see the landmark of Catania – the elephant fountain. “Via Etnea”, which leads through the city centre, is Catania's most famous shopping street. Here you can go shopping in marvellous boutiques, shoe and fashion stores. You will also see the ruins of an old Roman amphitheatre, which used to have space for 15,000 spectators.
Catania is also known for its exciting nightlife. There are more than 120 bars and pubs mainly located between "Piazza Stesicoro" and "Piazza Duomo". The “Bellatrix”, located inside of the antique “Bescari” theatre is an insider’s tip for those who wish to spend the whole night dancing.
The special charm of this Mediterranean city, which seems to resist every possible force of nature, makes Catania one of the most beautiful destinations for a trip around Italy.

Our language school is located directly at the “Piazza del Duomo” in the baroque city centre. The building is surrounded by stunning facades, numerous sights and is just a few steps away from the famous “Via Etnea”. The 5 modern and bright classrooms all have air-conditioning. Besides the lounge and the small library, students also have the opportunity to rent DVDs. Numerous leisure activities, such as guided tours through the city, cookery classes, wine and cheese tastings, film and karaoke nights, lectures focussing on history and literature, as well as student parties, are organised every week by our friendly school team and are already included in the price. Day trips to Mount Etna or to other Sicilian cities can be booked additionally at the school. All teachers are native speakers and are specially trained in teaching Italian as a foreign language.

Catania impresses with its numerous museums. Several of them were opened in honour of some of Catania’s most important citizens. “Museo Belliniano” offers the possibility to learn more about the world-famous composer of the opera “Norma”. More than 1500 etchings, engravings and bronze statues made by the sculptor Emilio Greco can be admired at the "Museo Emilio Greco". The "Casa Museo Giovanni Verga" gives an insight into the life of the Italian author. Another important site is the "Castello Ursino", which was built close to the sea by Frederick II. The entire city centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walks through Catania are therefore a must for every tourist. While strolling through the city you will pass the baroque facades of the imposing Cathedral “Sant’ Agata”, the former royal chapel “Collegiata” and the impressive buildings of “Palazzo degli Elefanti” and “Palazzo Biscari”, which were admired by Goethe during one of his trips through Italy. The elephant fountain and the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre are also worth a visit. There are various possibilities for spending the night out and about: you can either go to the theatre or to the opera; you can have a drink in a pub, a club or in one of the numerous bars. We highly recommend having dinner in the “Antica Marina”, a first-class fish restaurant, in which Giovanni, the chef, creates new delicious meals every day.
