LyonLyon is the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region and is, after Paris, one of the largest cities of France. Around 500,000 inhabitants live in Lyon, most of which are students studying at local universities. The cityscape combines small lanes in the historic part of the city with bistros, bars and award-winning restaurants. Lyon is the perfect location to study French; the city offers museums, an impressive opera house, many impressive religious buildings, big parks, an antique amphitheatre and a colourful nightlife. ![]() The historic part of the city, "Vieux Lyon", located on the left bank of the river Saône, became a World Heritage Site in 1998. Its many passages, the so-called "Traboules", decorate the old part of the city. In the past, "Traboules" were used as a quick passageways to connect the backyards with the historic houses, which you can still expore today. Start your journey at the "Place de Tolozan" and walk to the puppet theatre. The impressive basilica "Notre-Dame de Fouvrière", built in 1872, is located on the hill "Fouvrière" which is right by Lyon's historic "Vieux Lyon". You can reach the top of the hill with a funicular. The observation platform of the basilica gives a stunning view out over Lyon. On clear days, you can even see the Alps from the steeple, as well as the so called "Crayon", one of the few tall buildings in Lyon, located in the middle of the shopping district of the city. The basilica was erected in honour of the blessed Virgin Mary who, according to legend, kept the plague away from the city. To this day, the "Fête de Lumières", celebrated on 8th December, reminds us of the Saint's good deed. On this day, the people of Lyon put a candle in their windows in commemoration. Not far from the basilica, you will find the old Roman amphitheatre which is used during the summer months for plays and concerts. The famous "Nuits de la Fourvière" take place here from June to August. ![]() At the weekend, people meet at the big "Parc de la Tête d’or" where you can take a boat ride on the lake, see rare cacti in the Botanical Gardens or just relax under the trees. Dining is best in 'Vieux Lyon'; nowhere in France will you find as many excellent chefs as here: chef Paul Bocuse who was named "Chef of the Century" in 1989 lives and works here. Lyon's nightlife is renowned in the lanes, bars and clubs around the square "Place de Terreaux", near the city hall "Hotel de Ville", which is illuminated at night, and on the banks of the rivers Saône and Rhône.
