Byron Bay

Byron Bay is the most easterly point of Australia and a haven for backpackers, naturelovers, surfers and divers. Learning English with us in Byron Bay, you can discover long beaches, lush green rainforests, fierce streams, where canoeing is quite the adventure, thundering waterfalls, plunging from a height of over a 60 ft, or ’Julian Rocks’ with its countless colourful frogs, giant tortoises, whales and dolphins in the clear Pacific Ocean. The habitants of Byron Bay stay true to the ’Laid Back’ motto and greet everybody with friendliness and ease.

Around 28 miles away from Byron Bay,there is a small town called Nimbin, where the Aquarius Festival takes place every year, the Australian equivalent to the legendary Woodstock Festival.
In the National Parks, you can hear countless birds singing in the trees and see Koala bears chewing leaves. Cape Byron, as the most eastern point of Australia, offers spectacular views from the cliffs towards the lighthouse, rainforest, bay and the blue Pacific.

Places to buy fish and local specialities are very widely spread out in the areas along the coast, by bars, restaurants and markets. The bars and nightclubs come to life in the evening, which stay packed till early morning. And in the early hours, those awake make their way up to Byron Cape to scale the lighthouse, where they can be the first people in the whole of Australia to see the sun rise and you could also do the same on one of our English language courses.

The School

Our language school is situated in the centre of Byron Bay, a 5 minute walk from the beach. There are various cafes, shops, supermarkets and restaurants very close to the school, an ideal way to dive into the Australian way of life after the lessons.

The school has 14 air-conditioned classrooms with DVD players and TVs, as well as a large balcony, which is used in the evenings for the school’s famous barbeques. During break times, students relax in the school's garden or make friends in the café. The course material is not included in the course price and will cost between AU$50 and AU$150.

English and Surfing

At our school you have the opportunity to learn how to surf on 3 or 4 afternoons per week after your language course. We are working with a professional surf school for this course. The equipment will be provided by the surf school. The learn-to-surf-course for beginners is a 2-week course and will be held on 4 afternoons (2.5 hours each) per week. The surf course for advanced surfers is a 1-week course with surf lessons on 3 afternoons (2.5 hours) per week.

English and Diving

Our course "English and Diving" combines a language course with the possibility to take professional diving lessons. The diving course is held at weekends and can therefore be combined with all of our English course options. Diving lessons will be held on two weekends in a row from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The student will receive a diving certificate (SSI or PADI) at the end of the course, which enables the holder to dive anywhere in the world. The minimum level of English to participate in this course is A2 - lower intermediate. A medical diving examination by an Australian doctor is required for this course. The diving medical costs 60 AUD and is not included in the price. All diving equipment will be provided by the diving school.

Sightseeing in Byron Bay

Byron Bay offers a multitude of leisure activities. The town is famous for its excellent surfing conditions with first class waves along the long bay. Even the taxis are equipped with roof racks in order to accommodate surf boards and transport surfers to the beach. There are regular cayak trips for visitors to see hump back whales, dolphins, mantas, rays, giant tortoises and even sharks. We also recommend a hiking trip into the green surroundings, which comprise various national parks with rain forests, water falls and wild animals.

We recommend climbing Mount Warning, a volcano, which is 719 ft high and offers fantastic views. The surrounding fruit farms sell fresh mangos, peaches and bananas. To those who prefer to take things a little easier, we recommend a visit to one of Byron Bay’s cafes - a great place to enjoy the sunshine, a visit to one of the various small shops or to have fun in one of the leisure parks.

Accommodation

Family: In a single (SR) or double room (DR) with either breakfast (B&B) or half board (HB), full board at weekends. Average distance from the school: 15 minutes on foot. A double room can only be booked by two persons booking and travelling together.

Shared school-flat: Self-catered single (SR) or double room (DR) in a student house together with other students from the school. Shared bathroom and shared kitchen. Distance from the school: around 10 minutes on foot. If booking a double room, please let us know whether you would like to book a double bed or two single beds in the room. To book one of these rooms, you must be at least 18 years of age.

At our language school in Byron Bay, we offer the following exam preparation courses: preparation for the Cambridge Certificate (FCE, CAE) and IELTS.

Please note:

• You must be at an intermediate level of language to be on these courses (FCE: B1; CAE: B2; IELTS: B1). Enrolment onto this course is therefore subject to a grading test before the course starts.
• The exams normally take place in the last week of the course, therefore we can only offer limited teaching in that week.
• You can complete your IELTS exam registration beforehand on the internet at www.ielts.org, where you can find the application form and further information. We recommend that you book your exam several weeks in advance.
• You must pay the exam fee while in Byron Bay. Please consult the table regarding how much the exam fee will cost.
• Cambridge Certificates: You will find dates of the written papers (papers 1-3) in the table. According to our previous experience, we have found that the oral exams (papers 4-5) mostly take place a week after the end of the course. which is why the prices may include an extra week’s accommodation. As it is possible that the dates may be postponed, we recommend that you opt for a flexible flight reservation.
